American cloud applications are shaping everyday business life in Germany

A survey suggests that the process of cutting the cord with American tech giants may be more difficult and protracted than expected.

Pfungstadt, June 26, 2025 - A recent TechConsult survey of German companies commissioned by eperi shows that the prevalence of American cloud applications is high and the resulting dependency is great. Microsoft 365 alone is used by almost 30 percent of all companies worldwide. This suggests that potential efforts to break away from American cloud providers, particularly in the area of office management, can be particularly difficult.

Quasi-standard from the States

At 68.7 percent, almost seven out of ten German companies surveyed rely on US cloud-based applications such as Microsoft 365 for office management. At 44.1 percent, well-known collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams or Google Workspace also account for a large proportion of the daily work in offices and companies. Another 44.1 percent of the organizations surveyed by TechConsult also stated that they rely on US cloud solutions such as OneDrive or AWS for data storage or data exchange.

What is striking about the use of applications is the distribution that appears to depend on the size of the company: according to the survey, small companies with 250 to 499 employees (70.7%) and very large organizations with over 5,000 employees (60.7%) rely primarily on US cloud offerings for office management. Collaboration tools are primarily used in companies with 2,000 to 4,999 employees (48.5%), while cloud storage solutions are particularly popular with companies with 999 to 1,999 employees (50%).

The industry comparison also reveals special features: According to the survey results, a majority, 77.2 percent, of service companies use US cloud-based solutions for office management. Collaboration tools of American origin are also well above the average for all sectors at 50.9%.

"The snapshot we obtained illustrates the widespread use of American cloud solutions in everyday business life in Germany. This current situation is difficult to reconcile with the need of companies to free themselves from IT dependency on America. With eperi sEcure, we offer a solution especially for companies that currently see no real alternative to US cloud applications. They regain their data sovereignty without having to give up tried-and-tested applications. This creates security, technological and provider freedom and at the same time real freedom of action," says Andreas Steffen, CEO of eperi.
