Guidelines for secure and function-preserving data encryption in companies

eperi publishes a white paper with current study results, regulatory requirements, best practices and a checklist for the right encryption strategy.

Pfungstadt, November 30, 2024 - Data encryption has been on the agenda of IT managers for years. This topic is once again gaining momentum, not least due to directors' liability, NIS2, DORA and the German Trade Secrets Protection Act (GeschGehG). The white paper "The importance of data encryption in the digital age" from the encryption specialists at eperi shows the current state of encryption of sensitive data in Germany and gives those responsible guidance on how they can make their company secure for the future.

The need for data encryption is not just about protecting against cyber criminals. Numerous regulations - from the GDPR and NIS2 to KRITIS - also play a decisive role in the handling of data. Data security and data protection pose challenges for companies: Legal security, regulatory requirements and protection against unauthorized access must be in line with how data is handled in day-to-day work and must not negatively impact functionality or systems. The white paper from eperi takes a detailed look at this area of conflict and contains information on the legal situation and the current status of the use of encryption technology as well as best practices and specific recommendations for implementation.

The results of a snapshot of data encryption in Germany conducted by Techconsult in summer 2024 provide an introduction to the topic. The results show that encryption is a matter for the majority of managers in German companies and that fear of cyberattacks and espionage are important factors. However, the survey also shows that the use of encryption keys varies greatly and does not always meet the necessary security requirements. According to the survey, 65% of IT companies believe that the master key should only be available to them - but at the same time, 26% have no problem if the cloud provider also has access to it.

This is where the white paper comes in and shows how function-preserving encryption should work today, who is responsible for key sovereignty and the strategic value of sustainable encryption. The checklist, which gives companies guidance on which encryption strategy and solution is best suited to their own framework conditions, is particularly practical. Because one thing is certain: companies are 100% responsible for the security of their data. This makes it all the more important to establish an encryption phalanx to improve data protection and data security in the cloud.
